Did Aliens Built This 3-Sided Pyramid on Mars? Probably Not

Carl Sagan, an American astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, author, science popularizer, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences, wrote in his 1980 book Cosmos: “The largest Mars Pyramids have a base width of 3 km and a height of 1 km, so they are much larger than the Pyramids of Sumer, Egypt, and Mexico. With the ancient eroded shape, they could be small hills, sandblasted for centuries, but they warrant, I think, a closer look.”

Unraveling the Mystery of Martian Pyramids: Fact or Pareidolia?

NASA’s exploration of Mars has led to the publication of thousands of images, igniting curiosity and fueling questions about the possibility of life on the Red Planet. As we continue to study Mars, we discover similarities with Earth, such as the existence of water, oceans, lakes, and rivers billions of years ago. However, our fascination with these images has also led to speculation about the existence of pyramids, structures, and even UFOs on Mars.

The Phenomenon of Pareidolia

Pareidolia, a psychological phenomenon in which the mind perceives familiar patterns where none exist, often plays tricks on us. This effect causes people to see similarities between objects on Mars and those on Earth, leading to claims of alien-built structures. One such claim involves a supposed pyramid spotted by UFO hunter Scott C. Waring.

Waring stated, “I found a giant three-sided pyramid on Mars in a Gigapan photo today. The pyramid has one smooth side, probably the original outer coating made for it. Still, according to the Daily Express, the other two sides have severely eroded.”

The Alleged Martian Pyramid: Fact or Fiction?

Waring asserts that the pyramid on Mars is evidence of alien life. The image he references, captured by the HiRISE Camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), shows an unusual structure in the Candor Chasma region. However, the alleged pyramid is more likely a result of erosion and resembles other geological features in the area.

Debunking the Pyramid Theory

Despite assertions by the Cydonian Institute and a study published in Trade Science, experts contend that the triangular formation in Candor Chasma is not an intricately built pyramid. The formation’s geometry and symmetry do not necessarily indicate artificial origins.

The study authored by Haas concluded, “We contend that the structural form of this three-sided pyramid observed within the western region of Candor Chasma is real and exhibits a level of geometry and symmetry that supports a high probability of artificial origins.”

Astronomer Carl Sagan even suggested in his 1980 book, “Cosmos,” that such formations could be small, sandblasted hills, writing, “The largest Mars Pyramids have a base width of 3 km and a height of 1 km, so they are much larger than the Pyramids of Sumer, Egypt, and Mexico. With the ancient eroded shape, they could be small hills, sandblasted for centuries, but they warrant, I think, a closer look.”

The Importance of a Closer Look

Though claims of pyramids, walls, and other structures on Mars are intriguing, it is essential to consider the role of pareidolia in these perceptions. Further research and analysis of Mars’ geological features will help determine whether these formations are truly evidence of alien civilizations or simply natural occurrences.
