Orion and Egypt

Egypt and Orion: Why did the Ancient Egyptians Consider Orion of Great Importance?

For thousands of years, humans have been trying to study the accurate positions of the stars.

About 5000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians established an exceptional civilization. People of this day and age still refer to it even though ancient Egyptians are long gone; Egyptians lived an exemplary and lavish life and played a significant role in human history.

The pyramids of Egypt are well-known for their exquisite structure and formation. Various artifacts and remains of the ancient Egyptian kings and queens were found inside them.

For thousands of years, humans have been trying to study the accurate positions of the stars. If we talk about the Egyptians alone, the pyramids are built according to the Orion constellation.

In ancient Egypt, the stars of the Orion constellation were known as a God called Sah. The Orion constellation rises before Sirius, the star whose heliacal rising was the basis for the Solar Egyptian calendar. Moreover, Sah was associated with Sopdet, the Goddess who personified Sirius. Sopdu, on the other hand, is said to be the son of Sah and Sopdet.

It’s not just about Egyptian society. Multiple ancient individuals and their societies shared similar beliefs about Orion. They firmly believed that a kingdom of Gods presided over them. Hence, old societies have invested a lot of time in studying celestial bodies from ancient times.

All in all, the ancient Egyptians studied the night sky, taking measurements from the constellations to precisely align their pyramids and temples with the earth’s four fundamental points. They also recorded the sightings of the Great Bear and Orion with an instrument called merkhet.

The great pyramid of Giza is an impeccable representation of what I have just explained above. The said structure is spread over 15 acres and is made up of over 6.5 million limestone blocks. All four corners of the pyramid were accurately aligned to face north, south, east, and west. Modern-day scientists and archaeologists have not been able to spot an error as yet. They are also similar in length and are perfectly cut into equal sizes. Such accuracy is indeed difficult to attain, especially when we are talking about the old era. However, the ancient Egyptians defied all odds.

The Egyptians assumed that the sky Gods lived in the Duat, the kingdom of Osiris. It is located in the sky where Orion and Sirius rise heliacally just ahead of the summer solstice sun.

According to certain Egyptologists, the Giza plaza, with its three humongous pyramids, the Sphinx and River Nile, is a mirror reflection of the kingdom of Osiris. The three great pyramids of Giza depict three stars of the Orion, the Sphinx, on the other hand, corresponds with the constellation Leo. Moreover, River Nile corresponds to the Milky Way. Hence, it was significant for the ancient Egyptians to create similar sacred structures on planet earth. They believed in the sky Gods and tried to replicate the kingdom of Osiris.

By constructing pyramids, temples, and tombs according to the stars and the earth’s fundamental points, ancient Egyptians worshipped and pleased their Gods, bringing divine energy to the earth, which stopped the world from descending into turmoil and chaos.
