Harvard’s top astronomer argues that an alien spacecraft may be among us.
A distinguished professor from Harvard University kick-started a hot debate in the scientific community when he proposed that a mysterious interstellar object may, in fact, be an alien space ship.
And even though colleagues did not support his idea, the scientist is not backing down from his claims.
Avi Loeb, one of the top astronomers in the world and a man who has hundreds of publicized works in respected astronomy publications argues that the enigmatic space object dubbed ‘Oumuamua’ – first noticed by Hawaiian astronomers in 2017 could, in fact, be a spacecraft sent to our solar system by an advanced alien civilization.
The chairman of Harvard University’s astronomy department believes it is extremely arrogant to think we are alone in the universe.
The debate about Oumuamua’ being an alien probe is a heated one.
It is a suggestion that hasn’t been taken lightly by other astronomers, but it is perhaps something that millions of people around the world believe.
Even though Oumuamua may not be an actual spacecraft, millions of people around the world are convinced that we have been contacted by aliens in the past, and they are still here.
That’s one of the main reasons why the general public has welcomed the ideas set forth by Avi Loeb and his colleague Shmuel Bialy.
“Considering an artificial origin, one possibility is that ‘Oumuamua is a light sail, floating in interstellar space as a debris from a piece of advanced technological equipment,” Loeb and Bialy wrote in Astrophysical Journal Letters in November, reports the Washington Post.
“Many people expected once there would be this publicity, I would back down,” Loeb told The Washington Post.
“If someone shows me evidence of the contrary, I will immediately back down.”
And given the many mysteries surrounding the object, who can blame Loeb from not backing down?
Even the Hubble space telescope confirmed the object was beyond strange.
Not long ago, scientists observing the object with Hubble detected sunlight reflecting off the object’s surface which allowed NASA to estimate that the Oumuamua is extremely thin and highly elongated, like a cosmic cigar, stretching 800 meters at its longest.
But if that isn’t’ strange enough, scientists have also detected that the object is accelerating as it is moving away from the Earth.
Those are just some of the reasons why professor Loeb believes we may have been visited by aliens.
Rather than being a passively floating space rock from another solar system, professor Lob argues the possibility that, given the objects extremely thin nature, we are looking at an alien probe ‘propelled’ by a paper-thin light sail.
‘We find that although very thin, such an object can travel over galactic distances, maintaining its momentum and withstanding collisional destruction by dustgrains and gas, as well as centrifugal and tidal forces,’ Loeb and co-author Shmuel Bialy write in one of the papers published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
