Ancient Coins Discovered in Romania

Metal Detectorists Discover Ancient Coin Cache

An estimated 4,860 coins, three silver plates, and a ceramic pot holding the coins was discovered in Romania.

In the heart of a forest in western Romania, metal detectorists have unearthed a historical treasure, a cache of ancient coins. The trove, as the Romanian Amateur Archaeological Community reported, includes an estimated 4,860 coins, three silver plates, and a ceramic pot holding the coins. “Discoveries like this deliver an exhilarating feeling,” says Raoul Vlad Suta, one of the amateur treasure hunters, adding, “This is what every history buff and detectorist dream of.”

Suta, alongside two companions, made the intriguing discovery of the cache of coins, an event he recounts with pure joy. “When I received a consistent signal from the metal detector, I started digging,” Suta narrates. “My shovel unearthed a small silver coin, almost as if it had slipped from my own pocket. Yet, as more shallow coins came to light, our path led us to the top of a pot.”

Details of the Historic Hoard

The statement indicates the coins date back to the period between 1500 and 1550, during the reign of Vladislaus II (1456-1516), King of Bohemia, Hungary, and Croatia. The sum total of the unearthed treasure and its ceramic vessel weighs nearly 4.5 kilograms.

Reporting the Find

Upon the discovery, the treasure seekers promptly delivered their haul to the town hall of Nojorid, adhering to the Romanian law stating all findings of potential value must be reported to local authorities or museums within 72 hours. Among the thousands of coins, only four could not be identified by Suta, his associates, or the city officials. As of now, no additional data explains why these coins were hidden away in that particular spot.

Under Romanian legislation, metal detectorists may be entitled to a reward ranging from 30% to 45% of the officially assessed treasure value.
