At the beginning of the 19th century, numerous carved skulls made of milky white quartz and various other stones surfaced on planet Earth. The origin of the aforementioned skulls is a massive mystery as no one truly knows how they were formed or who constructed them. The experts who discovered skulls claim that they are thousands of years old. Some of them date back to the Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Aztec, Toltec, Mixtec or Maya.
Various people attribute supernatural powers to the skulls. Furthermore, certain individuals say that they were made for healing purposes and for enhancing a person’s psychic abilities. Other theories suggest that these were made for the people of Atlantis as the said skulls have been discovered from all over the globe.
Crystal skulls, in general, are not uncommon or unpopular as thousands of them are produced by Spain every year. However, the skulls we are referring to are indeed mysterious and have made archaeologists and experts thoroughly confused. There’s another bizarre theory that revolves the skulls. Certain people say that the skulls are from another planet. Aliens left them so they could return to the Earth one day.
The said crystal skulls are carved out of a single piece of quartz. The scientists were unable to spot any tool marks on them. Frederick Mitchell Hedges, an English adventurer, mentioned the haunting tales of the ancient crystal skulls in his 1954 memoir called ‘Danger My All’. He revealed that the skulls are indeed ancient and initially belonged to the Mayans civilisation. He also named one of the skulls as “skull of doom”. He stated that the people who cynically laughed at it died brutally and painfully.
The mysteries circulating the skulls could be fabricated because recently a group of archaeologists and scientists from the British Museum in London and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, conducted various tests on the said crystal skulls using electron microscopes. They, unfortunately, discovered markings that are made by modern-day carving machines rather than the stone, bone and wooden tools that would have been used in pre-Colombian times. The scientists ultimately concluded that the skulls are possibly fake. According to the latest theory, they think that the skulls were probably built in the late 1800s, in response to a flood of interest in the ancient world and its artefacts. People came up with various artefacts because the museums used to pay a considerable amount in return.
However, multiple skulls have been found all across the globe. The scientists only tested a couple which could indeed be fake. The skulls, in general, held significance in the Mesoamerican era. Some of them are still kept in personal collections. It is still unknown if all the remaining crystal skulls are fake or original. However, it was hard to carve something with this precision even in the 1800s. Humans lacked proper equipment back then.
There is enthusiasm on both sides of the problem, and the fact continues that no one truly knows for sure who made these skulls and when. There is currently no way to precisely discover the age of such inorganic objects. The mystery will probably continue. However, the archaeologists are still trying to find the traces of the ancient crystal skulls. They will hopefully be able to locate their maker in the future.
