Scientists have discovered many deformed and elongated skulls that tell a unique yet haunting tale about human history.
The people of the olden days had distorted beliefs when it came to physical beauty. Certain cultures believed in distorting various parts of the body.
Some of them used to practice foot-binding, while the rest used to invest their time in head-binding. Scientists and experts have tried to discover the purpose of the head binding, but they failed to do so.
There are quite a lot of theories that surround the enigmatic, elongated skulls; some people claim that the people that had elongated skulls were extraterrestrial beings mainly because their skulls were different than usual.
It is believed that the tradition of cranial bounding emerged around the Black Sea in the second and third centuries A.D. Moreover, the practice eventually faded in the seventh century.
Certain experts claim that skull correction may have been an extreme measure to represent one’s identity during the Migration Period c 300 700 A.D. when certain groups like the Goths and the Huns were competing for control of territory in Europe after the downfall of the Roman Empire.
Elongated heads must have made them feel superior to the rest. Hence, they initiated cranial binding.
Moreover, some significant sources claim that women that had elongated skulls were considered ‘treaty brides’.
They played a massive role in building connections or alliances between two communities or tribes.
As per various archaeological records, the aforementioned brides originally originated from Bulgaria and Romania. However, some experts do not buy this theory and simply call it a ruse.
They believe that we do not have sufficient records to support this argument. The truth, unfortunately, cannot be told as the women who had deformed heads are no longer alive.
The best part is that the history of elongated or deformed heads predates the written record. Hence, we are not certain if they were indeed aliens or not. Multiple records have been discovered that suggest the presence of enlarged and elongated skulls. Quite a lot of theorists claim that the people who had elongated or misshapen heads were of another world. However, the said claim is nothing but a theory.
The people of the olden days used various kinds of tools to shape the head of their children:
Yes, the people of ancient times used various tools and devices to shape the heads of their children. The head binding process generally started in the early months.
The people of the olden days used conical hats, objects, and flat boards to shape the heads of the infants.
The earliest suggested examples were once thought to include the Proto-Neolithic Homo sapiens component from Shanidar Cave in Iraq and Neolithic communities in Southwest Asia.
However, the earliest written record of cranial deformation is by Hippocrates, and it dates back to 400 BC.
Furthermore, cranial binding was a worldwide phenomenon, and it was common in multiple communities found in Iraq, Malta, Melanesia, Russia, North and South America, and Egypt.
As per various experts, head-binding was also common during the eras of Akhenaten and Tutankhamun.
As stated before, the deformation process started back when a child was young, perhaps soon after birth, and continued until the calcification of the skull. Multiple modern-day experts believe that this was attained by binding the skull with the help of cords and flat wooden boards.
However, this particular practice eventually died out. The people of Vanuatu natives still practice head-binding as its part of their culture. They refuse to let go of their customs and traditions.
All in all, quite a few people of the ancient era had deformed heads. However, we have no idea who originally started the process of the skull or cranial binding.
