Eris is one of the most distant large worlds known in the solar system, and its discovery changed the meaning of the word “planet.” When astronomers found it in images taken beyond Neptune, they first faced a naming problem: if Eris counted as a planet, the solar system would need a new and growing list of similar objects. The debate ended with a new category—dwarf planets—and Pluto moved into it alongside Eris.
That history can make Eris sound like a footnote in the Pluto debate. It is not. Eris is a world about the size of Pluto, with a small moon, a long tilted orbit and a surface so cold that its thin atmosphere can freeze onto the ground.
How Eris was discovered
The object now called Eris was first captured in observations made on October 21, 2003, during a survey of the outer solar system. Mike Brown, Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz identified it in January 2005. Its estimated size—comparable to Pluto’s—made the discovery immediately important. Astronomers had not simply found another icy body; they had found a reason to ask whether the old list of planets could survive new discoveries.

The nickname “Xena” appeared in early reports, but the International Astronomical Union gave the object its official name in 2006. Eris, the Greek goddess of discord, was a pointed choice for a world whose discovery unsettled the planetary order.
A remote world beyond Neptune
Eris averages about 68 astronomical units from the Sun. One astronomical unit is the average distance between Earth and the Sun, so sunlight takes more than nine hours to reach Eris at that distance. The dwarf planet belongs to the scattered disc, a distant population of icy bodies whose orbits were disturbed by the gravity of the giant planets.
Its path is far more stretched and tilted than Earth’s. Eris takes about 557 Earth years to complete one orbit, and its distance from the Sun changes dramatically along the way. There is no spacecraft image of a landscape on Eris; even our best views are unresolved observations and artist’s concepts based on measured properties.
How big is Eris?
NASA gives Eris an equatorial diameter of roughly 2,400 kilometres—about one-fifth the width of Earth and a little smaller than the Moon. Eris is close to Pluto in size, but its greater mass helped astronomers understand that size alone could not define a planet. The worlds share a family resemblance while living in very different orbital neighbourhoods.
A day lasts 25.9 hours
Eris turns once every 25.9 hours, making its day surprisingly close to Earth’s. Its year is the opposite of familiar: a single orbit around the Sun lasts more than five and a half centuries. That mismatch is a useful reminder that a “day” comes from a body’s rotation, while a “year” depends on its orbit.
Dysnomia, Eris’s only known moon
Eris has one known moon, Dysnomia. It completes a nearly circular orbit in about 16 days. The moon is more than a mythological companion: measuring Dysnomia’s orbit gives astronomers a way to calculate Eris’s mass and compare it with Pluto.
The name continues the theme. In Greek mythology, Dysnomia is associated with lawlessness and is described as a daughter of Eris. The pair’s names preserve the story of a discovery that forced a legal-sounding question in astronomy: what qualifies as a planet?
What is Eris made of?
Observations show methane ice on Eris’s surface. The dwarf planet is so cold that, when it moves farther from the Sun, gases can freeze and settle as frost. Closer to the Sun—still unimaginably distant by Earth standards—some of that material may return to a very thin atmosphere. Scientists know less about Eris’s interior than they do about Pluto’s, and claims about active geology remain hypotheses rather than settled facts.
Eris has no known rings and no confirmed atmosphere that behaves like Earth’s. Its surface temperature is estimated to vary between about −217 and −243 degrees Celsius. Those numbers describe a world where familiar materials become part of the landscape: methane and nitrogen are not just gases in a laboratory, but frozen surface compounds.
Why Eris is a dwarf planet
In 2006, the International Astronomical Union defined a planet as an object that orbits the Sun, is massive enough to become nearly round and has cleared its orbital neighbourhood. Eris meets the first two conditions but shares its region with many other icy bodies. Pluto, Ceres, Haumea and Makemake fall into the same dwarf-planet category.
The classification did not make Eris less interesting. It gave astronomers a way to describe a whole population of worlds without pretending that the outer solar system has a sharp edge between “real planets” and everything else.
The questions a spacecraft could answer
No mission has yet visited Eris. A close look could test how methane frost changes across its long orbit, measure the surface directly and reveal whether its interior contains layers of rock and ice. Until then, Eris remains a world known through careful inference—an object whose discovery taught us that the solar system was more crowded and less tidy than the schoolbook diagram suggested.
