The Great Sphinx of Giza, an enigmatic monument shrouded in mystery, has long fascinated historians, archaeologists, and tourists alike. As one of the world’s most recognizable ancient wonders, the Sphinx captivates the imagination with its colossal size and majestic aura. Despite centuries of research, many questions about its origin, purpose, and construction remain unanswered.

Carved During Khafre’s Reign?

Believed to have been built during the reign of Pharaoh Khafre around 2500 BC, the Great Sphinx of Giza features a lion’s body and a human head, likely depicting the Pharaoh himself. However, recent studies have questioned this widely accepted theory, suggesting that the monument could be significantly older and may predate Khafre’s reign.

Sphinx: the Protector of the Pyramids?

Adding to the enigma, the Sphinx’s true purpose remains shrouded in mystery. While some experts theorize that it was a guardian figure protecting the nearby pyramids, others propose that it may have had a spiritual or astronomical function. In any case, the monument’s significance has evolved over time, with various civilizations attributing different meanings to it.

Water Damage on the Sphinx?

The Sphinx’s weathered appearance is another topic of debate among researchers. Some believe that the extensive erosion on its body is a result of water damage, implying that the monument could have been exposed to heavy rainfall thousands of years ago. If true, this would support theories suggesting the Sphinx is far older than previously believed.
