Stone tools found in Saudi Arabia’s Nefud Desert may be the clearest sign yet that Neanderthals moved through Arabia between 60,000 and 50,000 years ago. The artefacts come from Jebel Katefeh-1, a site where researchers recovered a distinctive collection of prepared stone flakes. No Neanderthal bones have been found there, so the identification rests on the technology and its statistical comparison with tools made by different human populations.
The site lies in a landscape that is dry today but was not always so hostile. Arabia went through periods when rainfall created lakes, grasslands, and routes between Africa, the Levant, and the interior of Eurasia. Those wetter phases could have allowed different human groups to cross the peninsula, but direct evidence has been difficult to find because the region’s archaeological record is scattered and many sites are exposed to erosion.
The researchers examined 704 complete prepared flakes from Africa, Arabia, and the Levant, covering the period from about 100,000 to 50,000 years ago. They compared the shape and preparation of the pieces rather than relying on one unusual tool. A statistical model gave the Jebel Katefeh-1 assemblage a median 78 percent likelihood of being associated with Neanderthal technology; only four artefacts in the wider dataset favoured a Homo sapiens classification under the same method.

That result is evidence of resemblance, not a genetic identification. Stone tools are made by learned techniques that can spread between groups or arise independently when people face similar problems. Without human remains, ancient DNA, or a secure link to a known Neanderthal individual, the safest conclusion is that the assemblage is consistent with a Neanderthal presence and deserves further testing.
The tools matter because Arabia has often been treated as a corridor that people crossed on their way somewhere else. The Jebel Katefeh-1 evidence suggests a more complicated picture in which hominins may have returned to the peninsula during favourable climates and used local landscapes rather than passing through once. The site adds weight to the idea that Neanderthals occupied a wider range of environments than the classic European examples imply.
It also changes how archaeologists read the gap between fossils and tools. A bone can identify a species, but bones are rare and preservation is unpredictable. Stone-working traditions survive more often, although they must be interpreted with care. Combining technology, dating, climate history, and statistical comparison offers a way to test where different human groups travelled even when the people themselves left no skeleton behind.
Climate is part of the explanation. During wetter intervals, the Nefud was threaded by lakes and grasslands that could support animals and provide routes across the peninsula. When the climate dried, those routes narrowed or disappeared. A Neanderthal group did not need to occupy the desert continuously for the tools to matter; a series of short visits during favourable conditions could still show that Arabia was part of its range.
The next step is to find stronger independent evidence. New excavations could reveal hearths, animal remains, or human fossils at the site, while better dating could connect the tools to a particular wet phase in Arabia. For now, the tools provide a well-defined lead: people using a Neanderthal-like technological tradition were present in the Nefud Desert during a period when the peninsula could support movement and settlement.
